Liverpool: the Capital of Culture 2008, is known for it's martime history, world famous musical heritage, two Premiership's biggest football teams and two majestic Cathedrals. As well offering more museums and galleries anywhere outside of London, Liverpool is now brimming with new shops, restaurants, hotels and wine bars.
Museums
- Museum of Liverpool, (pictured) the 2011 newly built national museum in Britain for more than a century is housed at the landmark new building at the Pierhead. Themed galleries will document the history of the city and focus on different aspects such as its role as a cradle for creativity.
- Merseyside Maritime Museum, (pictured) where you can find out about companies, people and ships connected to the port.
- International Slavery Museum, which tells numerous poignant tales of bravery and rebellion among the enslaved people.
- World Museum Liverpool, is a fascinating spot, bulging with historic treasures from around the world, with an aquarim, bug house and planetarium.
Art
- Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, the national gallery of the North which houses works by Hockney, Degas, Turner and Rembrandt.
- Tate Liverpool, at Albert Dock is also a must-visit city art gallery, housed in a stunning Grade 1 listed converted warehouse that stafes fantastic free as well as paid-for-art exhibitions featuring work from Tracey Emin to Picasso.
- Liverpool Bluecoat, another distinctive Grade 1 listed, 290-year-old arts centre and gallery.
- Another Place (pictured) at Crosby Beach, otherwise known as the Gormleys - the 100 cast-iron life size sculptures of Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley.
Music
- The Beatles (pictured) are undoubtedly the band that is most strongly associated with the city. Liverpool is full of Beatles themed things to do such as The Beatles Story, the Magical Mystery Tour and where the band first started out - The Cavern Club.
Shopping
Liverpool ONE (pictured) in the heart of the city centre is the new designer shopping centre that is home to famous high street names from Apple to John Lewis. The Metquarter offers more select fashion and beauty outlines such as MAC and Tommy Hilfiger. For higher end fashion, there's the Cavern Walks where you will find Vivienne Westwood and Cricket.
